Caring For Our Kids
by Kelli Urton
Struggling
children are often misunderstood by the adult world. Several
children struggle in school daily because of differences in
learning styles. The causes are often unknown, specific problems
can be difficult to pinpoint, and the long-term effects hard to
predict.
Finding precisely where a breakdown in learning is occurring when a
child is falling behind begins with the teacher, parents,
clinicians, and the student himself/herself working together to
create a neurodevelopment profile—a kind of balance sheet that
accounts for the child’s strengths and weaknesses.
Including a child’s special interests in an individualized learning
plan can both motivate and help through or around a learning
difficulty. For example, reading about something that interests you
can help enhance reading skills. The same can be said for writing,
remembering information, and for concentrating. We must not only
recognize these strategies as practical, but apply them widely in
an effort to help children achieve their potential.
At Conestoga we want our students to achieve success. In fact it is our mission to provide a quality education to prepare all learners to be contributing members of society. I know personally our staff as well as I have talked to many students and have tried to explain the importance of coming to school and doing their possible best. I am asking for your help as parents and active members of our community to help us in this endeavor. Start by talking to your child and if there is anything our staff or I can do please let us know.
