Welcome to the Business Department. I am Sheila Walters, the business instructor. The classes offered with each course description are:
Information Technology
Course Description
• Students will review the keyboard using touch method
• Students will format correctly various business documents
• Students will develop keyboarding proficiency through speed
drills and practice.
• Students will learn and use standard proofreading marks.
• Students will learn workplace ethics, relationships, and
communication skills through job simulations and projects.
• Students will learn to use various technical tools such as
Internet, word processing, spreadsheet applications, and database
applications.
• Students will learn to create presentations using presentation
software.
Computer Applications
Course Description
In this course, we will begin by reviewing basic keyboarding
skills and work towards improving those skills. Students will also
learn to do word processing, publishing, spreadsheets, database,
and presentations through the use of Word, Excel, Access, and
PowerPoint software programs.
Information technology is a prerequisite for this course.
Computer Applications II
Course Description
This course is intended to continue the exploration of
Microsoft Office 2007 which was initiated in the Introduction to
Computer Applications course which is a prerequisite. Emphasis is
on more complicated exercises which require students to apply
practical computer problem solving skills. Concepts covered include
advanced word processing techniques, solving problems using
spreadsheet software, creating a database and understanding its
function, creating an independent presentation using presentation
graphics software and understanding desktop publishing
essentials.
Business Communications
Course Description
This course will help students recognize the importance of
basic communication skills. Communication in today's fast-paced,
competitive workplace requires a solid understanding of effective
communication principles and technical communication. Communication
for the Workplace places more emphasis on these critical skills
needed for career success in the 21st century workplace. With more
focus given to technical communication, distance learning,
research, E-mail, customer service, cultural diversity and other
contemporary business issues, this book will provide comprehensive
information addressing essential writing, speaking and listening
skills necessary to excel not only in today's workplace but also in
the workplace of tomorrow.
Eighth Grade Business
Course Description
Technology touches almost every part of our life, especially
our work life. Computers, electronic cash, and the Internet create
new opportunities and challenges for businesspeople. This course
provides information about technological advances that are
influencing the way we do business. The role of technology in
business is the focus of the first unit. Students are introduced to
the elements of computer systems and how businesses use computers;
specific types of application programs are discussed and the
important present-day and future functions technology fulfills in
our economy. The second unit addresses career development and
career opportunities. Basic tips on gathering information about
careers and steps in the career planning process are discussed and
utilized. The third unit provides students with an overview of
being an informed consumer. Students will not only be exposed to
their role as consumers but also to sources of consumer
information. The use of various consumer skills to make appropriate
buying decisions will be introduced. By following buying
decision-making steps and learning how to be a comparison shopper,
students will learn when and how to make wise purchases. The
consumer movement is briefly addressed followed by a discussion of
the seven rights and five responsibilities of every consumer.
