Welcome to
Second Grade
From the Conestoga Second Grade Teachers:
Mrs. Gallagher and Mrs. Heneger
We would like to welcome you to your Conestoga Second Grade and share with you some of the educational curriculum your second grader will study during this school year.

Our Reading program is published by Scott Forsman. Some of the students travel between the two second grade classrooms for reading so that individual learning and ability levels of the students can be met successfully. Second Grade students participate in the Conestoga AR Reading program which allows each child to experience reading at his or her individual reading level.
I am sure our Second Grade parents have
heard their child speaking such words as: “breve, macron, the
sneaky E, combinations”, and many more terms. These terms are
studied by our Second Graders using the Saxon Phonics
program. The second grade Saxon Phonics program is a
continuing and expanding program from the student’s First
Grade Saxon Phonics program. Mrs. Heneger teaches the
Saxon Phonics and Saxon Spelling classes while Mrs.
Gallagher teaches the Scott Foresman Social
Studies and Scott Foresman Science
classes. This allows the teachers to travel between
classrooms while the students remain in their own homeroom for
these classes.
Second Grade
Handwriting is the Zaner Bloser writing
program.
Our English curriculum is Write
Away.
Saxon Math is our second
grade math program. The Saxon Math program is the math
curriculum used at Conestoga Schools in Kindergarten through the
eighth grade.
The students are
involved with variousArt projects throughout the school
year.
Current Events in
Second Grade is taught using the Scholastic
News.

In September our second graders were involved in the observation, caring for, feeding, and documentation for the metamorphosis process of the Painted Lady butterfly from the cocoon to the adult stage of this magical reformation. The children enjoyed this experience but were somewhat reluctant to release the adult butterfly for their trip to the south during our cold winter months.

During October through November our second graders will be studying the different Native American tribal heritages.
December and January study
units will consist of various topics, such as: winter
weather, dressing for the changing weather, weather safety, and
local and national holiday cultural traditions.
Addresses, mailing letters, and many other
activities will be studied during the month of
February.
March and April we will be studying the
changing weather.
May will be our final month in
school.

for your support and for caring about your student. Together we
will have a wonderful Second Grade school year.
