Watch Out for That Big Yellow Vehicle!!!
by Mark Sievering
Now that school is in full swing, those big yellow vehicles (also known as school buses) are back on the road. I understand that they take up a lot of room, and sometimes (when we're following them) don't travel as fast as we would like for them to. However, I'd also like to remind you of an old saying - Those buses are indeed carrying "our most precious cargo - our children"! Please remember that the drivers are operating a vehicle several times the size of the average family vehicle, and hauling several times the number of children as the average family vehicle. (Imagine your own children in your vehicle, add a friend or two, multiply that by a bunch, and you get the picture)
With that in mind, when you see a school bus, please use a little extra caution as you pass, and maybe give the driver a friendly wave. (And please DON'T pass if the stop arm is out) I'd also encourage you to say a BIG THANK YOU to anyone who drives a school bus! They have an extremely important job safely transporting that "precious cargo" - and even do so the vast majority of the time with a smile on their faces!
Conestoga Schools contract with Nebraska School Bus for our bussing services. Jerry and Norma Kenney are our local bus barn managers.. They do a great job of making sure the buses are in good working order, and also in making sure we have qualified drivers to drive. (By the way, they're always looking for drivers, so if you like kids, have a good driving record, have some time during the day and would like to make some extra money, give Jerry or Norma a call at 235-2206. They would be happy to talk to you)
Thank you for caring about the safety of our students!
